Sitting behind my desk I put the charger in the window frame. My laptop starts charging immediately. While enjoying the sunlight, I’m making my school assignment. The laptop is fully charged in a short amount of time.

Not only in a private setting like a home but also in companies the window frame charger is a replacement for standard wall plugs. The fact that we won’t need fossil energy to charge our laptops and gadgets but just with sunlight will be a great development!

The genius idea:

Two students from Delft (Ferdinand Grapperhays and Willem Kesteloo) came with a new concept. A window frame which will generate ‘green energy’. (Bright.nl, 2018). With green energy, I mean by sunlight. The buildings will have a system within their window frames that will convert sunlight into energy.

Since 2016 in Eindhoven, the headquarters of Rabobank have implemented the ‘Window frame charger’. These workers charge their phones with their window frames.

The reason why companies are interested in these kind of concepts is because they want to make their buildings more ‘green’. Sustainability is getting more important for companies (Lachmeijer, 2018).

Ferdinand and Willem are busy with this concept since 2016. In 2018 they received 1,5 million euro from a few real estate companies. With this money, they have built their project and have further developed the technology.

Saving the earth!

Sustainability is an important subject and is receiving more attention. Because fossil energies are getting drained day by day, there Is a high need to produce green energy (Zeehandelaar,(n.d.).

The reason why the ‘Window frame charger’ is such a great idea is because this could be the solution for the future. Like the macro trend energy harvesting, this could be a little step to a bigger result. Energy harvesting just means that small devices which are wireless can work and charge by ‘green energy’(Your individual Trend Radar. (n.d.).

Especially companies who are planning to expand, or already established companies could be taking advantage from this way of generating energy. Instead of using grey energy and drain the climate, companies could also replace this grey energy with energy harvesting.

Currently energy harvesting is used just in small amounts. Just a certain amount of 2m is installed with this kind of energy source.

This year also a few companies were awarded for being the most sustainable companies in The Netherlands. Some examples are: AkzoNobel, Koninklijke DSM (in the sector Chemistry), Phillips (in the sector Industrial Conglomerates). Phillips lightning (in the sector Electrical Components & Equipment). KPN and Unliver were the only companies awarded within their sector.

If you would ask my opinion, I would think that besides companies, households will make use of energy harvesting in the near future. The reason why is because the use of green energy will be the only kind of backup. The government made a deal to produce 14% green energy in 2020. At this moment, this is 2,2% (Vpro zondag met lubach, 2018).

So Obviously, the Dutch government has a long way to go. To replace the grey energy for green energy is a long way. This is because the Dutch Economy is built on gas, gasoline and electricity. To adapt to green energy is a big step and could cause some instability. However, someday the Dutch government should fully adapt to green energy as their new form of energy.

How about the future?

Sun and wind energy will increase from now 2% to 100% in 2050. This means that there is a long way to go (Schuren, 2018).

In 2050 there will be no place for grey energy. The fossil fuel will be drained in such a way that there is no possibility to gain energy from it anymore. What I see in the future is that energy will be reused in some way. Think about landscapes winning their electricity from for example water or wind energy. On the roads, there could be solar cells to produce energy by sunlight.

In the future, it will be easier for human society to produce and use electricity. It will happen in a fast, save and green way. The government will also take responsibility to make sure our earth isn’t getting drained by environmental pollution.

The world in 2050 will be way more conscious about our nature and animals. The fact that people will learn to take care of our world and that there will be more awareness on recycling resources, will be a great development.
